Permanent Magnetic Drum Motors for Heavy-Duty Belt Conveyors: A B2B Buyer's Guide

Table of Content [Hide]

Belt conveyors are the backbone of bulk-material handling in mining, power generation, steelmaking and port operations. The drive system determines how reliably tons of material move every hour. Traditional arrangements use an external motor, gearbox and coupling to turn the conveyor pulley. That layout works, but it consumes floor space, adds mechanical interfaces and loses energy across each transmission stage.

A permanent magnetic drum motor takes a different approach. The motor is built inside the conveyor drum itself. The rotor is the drum shell, and the stator is fixed to the stationary shaft. This direct-drive architecture removes the gearbox, high-speed coupling and external motor housing in one step.

Ouruian manufactures permanent magnetic drum motors in the STYB and FTYB series. These are three-phase permanent magnet synchronous drum motors designed as integrated belt-conveyor drives. They combine the pulley and motor into a single assembly, so the drum becomes the drive.

    Key specifications and performance

The STYB series covers drum diameters from 630 mm up to 1,400 mm, with rated power from 30 kW to 315 kW. Belt widths range from 650 mm to 2,000 mm, and belt speeds typically run from 1.6 m/s to 5.0 m/s, with some models reaching 6.3 m/s. Rated voltages include 380 V, 660 V and 1,140 V, with higher-power units mainly supplied at 660 V or 1,140 V.

The FTYB series is offered in 630 mm and 800 mm drum diameters, with power ratings from 22 kW to 110 kW. Belt widths are also 650 mm to 2,000 mm, and belt speeds range from 1.25 m/s to 5.0 m/s. Voltage options are 660 V and 1,140 V.

Both series use variable-frequency vector control. Starting torque reaches 2.2 times rated torque, and overload torque can reach two times rated torque. That high torque margin matters when conveyors restart under full load or when material surges.

Because the drive train has no external gearbox, system efficiency improves by more than 20 percent compared with conventional motor-reducer-coupling arrangements. Maintenance is also reduced. Bearings need lubrication only every 3,000 operating hours, and the overall maintenance workload drops by more than 90 percent relative to traditional drives.

    Where these drum motors fit

Ouruian permanent magnetic drum motors are used wherever bulk materials travel over long distances or through demanding conditions. Typical applications include:

    · Underground coal mining, including environments with methane and coal-dust explosive mixtures.

    · Surface mining and ore processing.

    · Cement, aggregate and building-materials plants.

    · Coal-fired and other thermal power stations.

    · Iron and steel plants.

    · Port terminals, docks and bulk-loading facilities.

    · Non-ferrous metal processing lines.

Standard ambient conditions are -15 °C to +40 °C, with altitude up to 2,500 m. Relative humidity should not exceed 95 percent at 25 °C. For water-cooled variants, cooling-water temperature should stay between 5 °C and 40 °C, and cooling-water pressure should be 0.3 MPa to 0.8 MPa.

    What to check before ordering

Selecting the right drum motor starts with the conveyor duty. Buyers should gather the following information and confirm it with the supplier:

    1. Belt width and speed. These determine drum diameter and rotational speed.

    2. Power and torque demand. Include starting torque under full load and peak overload conditions.

    3. Voltage and supply frequency. Match site electrical standards.

    4. Environmental conditions. Temperature range, dust, moisture and altitude affect cooling and insulation choices.

    5. Installation space. Drum motors save space, but shaft mounting and take-up travel still need verification.

    6. Maintenance access. Although lubrication intervals are long, confirm how bearings will be serviced over the unit's life.

    Why source from Ouruian

Ouruian builds drum motors across a wide power and diameter range, which lets engineers select a closer match to the application instead of oversizing. The integrated design reduces the number of suppliers and mechanical components on the bill of materials. Application experience in mining, power and port industries means the company can size units for real operating cycles rather than just catalog conditions.

If you are planning a new conveyor or retrofitting an existing drive, send the belt width, speed, load profile and site electrical details. Ouruian can recommend a STYB or FTYB drum motor and provide a proposal for your project.
